The
Wind Captures Imaginations and Powers Your Community
When you drive through Melancthon Township, which is about 90
minutes northwest of Toronto’s Pearson Airport, visitors can see
majestic wind turbines throughout the municipality. These wind turbines
power hundreds of homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses. Sailboat
design inspired the first windmill, but modern wind technology is
inspired by aerospace design.
Wind turbines produce electrical power by converting wind
energy into rotating mechanical energy that drives electrical
generators. On a wind turbine three large blades are attached to a
horizontal shaft that turns an electrical generator. Maximum power
occurs when the turbine rotates to face directly into oncoming wind. The
amount of power that turbines can generate depends on two factors: blade
diameter and wind speed.
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy refers to energy sources that provide usable
energy without depleting limited resources. These include water,
biomass, wind, solar and earth energy. Ontario is making great strides
to move away from dependence on fossil fuels—coal and natural gas—and
wind energy projects like Melancthon I Wind Plant are part of the
solution.
All Canadians can benefit from renewable energy as it
provides:
-
Energy price
stability, as it depends on free, renewable resources like wind or
water
-
Clean air and
little to no effect on global warming
-
Small environmental
footprint that protects watersheds and minimizes land use
-
Support for rural
economies (employment, local goods and services, stable tax base)

Other Wind Plants
Canadian Hydro’s Southern Alberta Wind Plants are located in
the southwest corner of Alberta, with the majority of the 86 turbines
near the small town of Cowley, which is just west of the town of Pincher
Creek along Highway #3. Additional turbines are located directly west of
Pincher Station and near the Town of Magrath, which is south of
Lethbridge. Check out
www.cowleyridge.com for more information on our Southern Alberta
Wind Plants.
In development are the Melancthon II Wind Project with 88
turbines and the Wolfe Island Wind Project, near Kingston, Ontario, with
86 turbines. Additional information is available at
