Canadian Hydro operates three types of renewable energy plants:
wind, hydro and biomass.
Canadian
Hydro operates five wind plants in
southwestern Alberta,
Cowley Ridge, Cowley North, Sinnott,
Soderglen and Taylor. In southern
Ontario, Canadian Hydro owns and operates the Melancthon I
Wind Plant and in Quebec, le Nordais Wind Plant. The company operates twelve hydroelectric plants in three Canadian
provinces. Belly River, Waterton, St. Mary and Taylor are located
in Alberta; Ragged Chute, Appleton, Moose Rapids, Galetta & Misema
in Ontario; plus, Akolkolex, Pingston
& Upper Mamquam in British Columbia.
To explain how biomass works, we can look at Canadian Hydro’s
first biomass plant, the Grande Prairie EcoPower® Centre. The plant uses wood waste to
generate both electricity and steam for use in lumber mills. The EcoPower® Centre cuts particulate emissions from
the old silo burner at the mill by 80 per cent.
