Renewable Energy Certificates

When you purchase RECs—Renewable Energy Certificates—you become a Green Power Consumer. For a small annual cost, you ensure that energy from clean sources is produced either provincially or nationally and, you help preserve our environment for future generations to enjoy.

Canadian Hydro produces Green Power via wind, hydro and biomass projects. Green Power results in minimal harm to the environment, as the process uses resources that regenerate naturally. Also, Green Power produces minimal air pollution and emissions. This is why it is important to purchase your annual REC, as you become the proud owner of green credits that in turn create a demand for the production of renewable energy.

RECs are the means of transferring the legal and beneficial ownership of the environmental attributes to your home or business. RECs are purchased annually to help improve the environmental performance of the overall supply of electricity. Your acquisition also contributes to job creation and economic development in your community.

You can offset up to 100 per cent of the emissions from your home by buying RECs. The average household dumps about four garbage bags of waste each day into   the   atmosphere.    This   is   based   on   the   average   home consuming 20 kilowatt hours of electricity per day, or over 7000 kilowatt hours per year. For a small month fee, you contribute to a cleaner, safer environment.

Remember to ensure that when you purchase RECs, the generating facility is EcoLogo® certified as low-impact renewable energy and built after 1990, with a preference  to  newer  facilities.  Producers  dedicated  to  the  development  of low-impact renewable energy and substantially free of carbon emissions should be given preference over producers that have significant carbon emitting facilities in their portfolio.
